Nutsubidze Slope Urban Laboratory A Pioneering Experimental Rehabilitation Strategy Project Overview This project serves as an experimental pioneer in the Georgian urban landscape, utilizing street art not merely as decoration, but as a primary tool for comprehensive urban rehabilitation. By selecting the Nutsubidze Slope—a district with a unique hilly topography and a pre-planned master-planned history—the project explores rehabilitation across three distinct dimensions: city, urban, and human scales. A New Academic Collaboration In a first-of-its-kind partnership, GSAF has integrated the creative energy and technical expertise of architectural university students into the core of the project. Supported by GTU’s academic staff and facilities, a team of student volunteers has been trained to apply architectural and urban planning principles to street art policy. This collaboration bridges the gap between formal education and informal urban study programs, providing future specialists with direct, hands-on experience in transforming their city. Experimental Methodology The project operates as an Urban Laboratory, employing a multi-disciplinary research framework: • Scientific Rigor: The final output is designed as a document equivalent to a scientific paper, blending local specifics with global best practices in street art policy. • Data-Driven Design: The strategy is built on in-depth area research, including 3D modeling, human-scale photography, and the analysis of social demographics and transportation flows. • Community Co-Creation: Experimental surveys are conducted among local residents to identify social problems and specific themes or characters they wish to see on their walls, ensuring the final art is authentic to the neighborhood. Expected Impact and Sustainability As a pioneering initiative, the project aims to set a new standard for how residential, recreational, and public spaces can be systematically transformed with focused investment. • Urban "Gentrification" & Safety: The intervention aims to convert the district into a more "nice and cozy" place to dwell, improving the general state of mind of local citizens. • Economic & Social Credit: By establishing open-air galleries and legal graffiti spaces, the project intends to add the district to the city's tourist map, raising its socio-economic level. • Civil Society: Ultimately, street art is positioned as a tangible means of communication to foster a healthy civil society and show residents that transforming their own environment is possible.
